How can the German Empire be remembered? An inventory and interpretation of historical research and didactic mediation. 2021 marked the 150th anniversary of the founding of the German Empire. But where is the research on the German Empire? Where are the synergies between historical studies and current politics of remembrance? This book dares to take stock and attempts to bring three areas together: First, it looks at the interpretations of the German Empire that emerged in the publications on the anniversary and led to the resurgence of controversy about its interpretation. Second, it takes stock of the differentiated research that, beyond historiographical debates, always deals with new topics for German history between 1871 and 1918. Thirdly, the didactic mediation of the empire in schools, museums and historical places is discussed: which aspects of recent research are taken up in the mediation, and in which formats is this possible? Experts from historical research and institutional practice are thus contributing to a discussion that will not be over even after the anniversary in 2021.
