520 _a"Approximately 10,000 Moldovan Jews were imprisoned in the Obodovka ghetto in Ukraine during the Second World War. This was in the part of Ukraine that was under Romanian occupation, and Jews had a better chance to survive there than in parts of Ukraine that were under German control. Romanian soldiers did not try to murder every single Jew in the camp with bullets. Still, most of the ghetto's inhabitants perished from disease and starvation during the first winter. Journalist Julie Masis, who visited her grandfather in the nursing home until he passed away at the age of 102, wrote down his memories about this little-known chapter of the Holocaust. The stories touch on how Ukrainians helped the Jews in the ghetto survive, and also include a family legend about a German medic who fell in love with the author's Jewish grandmother"--
